R H Auslander has woven an interesting tale of Sevastopol in late February 2014. The author’s extensive knowledge of the tactics and protocol of both the Russian and NATO side of the event becomes clear as the story unfolds, as does his knowledge of Russian culture.

The fate in early March of the NATO forces stationed in Fiodosya on the south coast of Krimea is known, but what happened to the NATO enclave in Sevastopol in February? The US Marines in the enclave, located on Ulitsya Simonok in Rahdio Gorka Region on north side of the harbor, had been ordered at dawn on 23 February by the Sevastopol government to leave the city in two days, which they refused to do. They were gone from Sevastopol and Krimea by sunrise of 24 February.

In Soviet times, readers of the news were adept at reading the news and finding the nuggets of truth. That skill is useful when reading this tale. Is this story true? Only the author, and those who may or may not have been involved in an event that may or may not have happened, know for sure.

Annya Vitalevna Koli has written a pleasant and wonderful little story of her life as a young girl. She goes to her new Mum and Father when she is very young, so young she can not run up steps, she is so small she has to walk up them. She finds that she is different than other Collies, what her new family calls her sister and her new aunts and uncles are yellow, black and white, and red. She is blue like her Dog Mum, who is the only dog she has ever seen in her young life.

She and her new dog family have a unique world, a world of ‘two legs’, ‘rooms that move’, ‘kat things’, ‘suns and dark times’ and ‘h’vostiki’. She tells the reader in her own words what she sees and how she lives in her new family and the reader can understand as she grows and her knowledge and vocabulary increase. She has a unique writing style and she is very open about how she and other dogs talk to each other all the time, but no ‘two leg’ understands ‘Dog’. Like most dogs she is bilingual, she speaks Dog and understands Russian very well. As the season changes and goes from ‘warm time’ to ‘cold time’, her new Mum trains her for a show. She and her dog family are very excited on the day she goes to her first show in her quest to be Champion, and fate takes an unusual turn for her and another dog she finds at the ‘show thing’.

This is her first book of a series, she likes to write and is working on her second book now that the ‘cold time’ is here.

R H Auslander uses his intimate knowledge of Russian Armed Forces, Russian culture and Russian history to give the reader a deep look in to Russia, her culture and her Spetznaz Regiments. The author’s deft hand and storytelling ability open to the reader a view of Russia few outside of Russia have seen in a gripping tale of romance and war wrapped in a vivid panorama of love and honor, betrayal and treachery, loyalty, faith and duty.

With the clouds of war darkening the horizon for all to see, the story unfolds of Annya Dmitrovna, a beautiful Russian lady, and Starshi Sarjant Roman Ivan’vich, a foreign man, a professional soldier serving for Russia in 3 Rota of 317 Independent Spetznaz Regiment. As their romance blossoms into an understanding during a night of good food, good wine and animated conversation, the thought of war banished from their minds, Roman Ivan’vich is ordered at 01:00 in the morning to report to his regiment immediately.

When the regiment gathers and moves to assembly and deployment, an ominous event portends trouble. As the war begins and the fighting progresses treachery rears its ugly head, a treachery and betrayal that goes to the very heights of power in Moskau, contrasting dramatically with the courage, honor and loyalty of the Spetznaz set in the mixture of east and west that is Russia and the unique culture of her Spetznaz, those warriors who are never defeated, who are Never The Last One.

R H Auslander has used his considerable knowledge of Russian culture and Russian Armed Forces to skillfully weave a tale of people, places and happenings in to a fictional story of the world shaking events of late 2013 through early 2014 in Sevastopol and Krimea which led to the Russian Spring of late February, 2014.

The narrative starts with the bucolic retirement life near Odessa of the veterans of 317 Spetznaz Regiment from the author’s epic novel Never The Last One, and their realization that there is trouble on the horizon. The reader will recognize many of the characters from the novel and their story is woven in to the fabric of this narrative with a deft hand. New characters appear as the story progresses, their back stories quite believable and blending in to the fabric of this story seamlessly as the veterans settle in to a new life in a small village in Sevastopol Region, all the while knowing they will be called back to service as the storm clouds gather.

With real events, real locations and real actions placed in front of the reader, some readers have asked the question of is this story fictional or true. In Soviet times, readers of the news were adept at reading the news and finding the nuggets of truth. That skill is useful when reading this tale.
